I searched the forums and didn't find anything relating to this book.
http://www.lulu.com/content/7200512 I found this free E-book you can download in pdf format about shabutie and many other bands in the area back as early as 1995. It has some rare Shabutie pictures that I don't think have been posted on here and also some rare pics of band members in previous bands. There are also parts about 3 and josh's part in that band including a picture or two, some Shabutie fliers, and Nate Kelly pictures. There's also some info on John and how Travis was their main vocalist. I didn't know Shabutie was named Leader One for a brief period of time before changing their name to Coheed and Cambria, Leader One was also the previous Name of Weerd Science, Josh Eppard's solo project. Also the Author speaks a lot about his sister Cambria which I'm not sure of but may be where the band got that name from. Im just speaking for people who don't read all of it so this stuffs just a brief summary haha. Hope you guys enjoy this, it has some very cool information in it. [Edit] I searched E-Books and actually found someone mentioning this but this thread should show more people the book is out there, thanks. |

[I apologize now for the long post, but this is a very interesting part. For those of you who dont want to read the whole thing, but are interested in the big portion of the Shabutie section]
In 1995 Shabutie started out in Nyack, NY , originally called Beautiful Loser. This was Nate's first band after Moe & The Boogie Cats dissolved under weird circumstances, and he would play with Shabutie well into the year 2000. The line-up of this band was Claudio Sanchez on guitar and vocals , a truly astounding guitarist who tears through songs like no one else, Travis Stevers as the primary vocalist (who would one day return as a guitarist and back-up vocalist in Coheed & Cambria), Nate on drums and a nice guy named John Carleo on bass. Travis didn't last long, at first, and soon left the band, leaving them as a trio. John played very simplistic stoner plodding type grooves, which were cool, but from the start Nate and Claudio were making things more and more complex. John lasted for awhile during the formative earliest days of the band, at least long enough to be featured with them on a comp tape of local acts I put out called "Charge Them Extra." They submitted a funny song called "Phillip's Head". The song shows Claudio's experimental side in full swing even at an early stage, bridging some weird gap between ska, alternative gloom and stomping cock rock all at once. Claud's voice flitters on top of the tune like some cross between Perry Farrell and the Specials , only to explode along with Nate into a full bravado chorus of "pickle boy, now you suck." No one knew what that meant for quite awhile. The band got a lot of flack from the start for Claudio's different style of singing, but I always tried to bring them up from Nyack as much as I could to play with Melancholy at the Youth Center in Woodstock. It was always obvious to me that they were really great, even if I used to bust on the rap's Nate used to put in the songs. Sorry Nate, but you used to call yourself M.C. Wilbur! I always believed in them and their talent. Other people were very resistant to their sound and Claudio's unique, high octave range take on singing. I used to have to call them up to get them to do stuff because they were discouraged and I’d just book them anyway even if they didn't want to play and threaten them that if they didn't show people would hate them more, haha. They won over more and more fans each time they played up here, but it would be negligent of me not to mention everyone used to leave when they played and to include this old show review from our high school 'zine to give you an idea about how some people felt towards them. "Claudio sounded somewhat like a Vienna choir boy who recently took a shot to the sack with an aluminum baseball bat. The guy's speaking voice sounds nothing like that and I don't know why he aspires to sing like this"- from Harder Copy 9 (1995/Pull Press) That review was written by Jim "Happy Pants" Donadio, a heavy-set, socially awkward metal fanatic who played guitar for the almost universally hated high school band Dr. Phil. In truth, Jim is an open minded person and a very friendly soul, but when he wrote for Zac's first 'zine, he had the bright idea to breed controversy surrounding the scene through maintaining a distinct critical stance towards most of the bands. While this eventually deteriorated our first 'zine into a series of arguments by different contributors, for awhile people were looking for the trash talking so much in the rag that they actually learned about the bands too. Jim, whether anyone knows it or not, is in a large way responsible for getting tons of kids to old school local shows, even if they never went to see Dr. Phil. Here's a funny bit of trivia...Mic Todd, Coheed & Cambria's bassist was originally an early guitarist in Dr. Phil. His tenure didn't last long though, and then he ended up in Shabutie almost overnight. Actually, now that you mention it, Nate jammed with them early on too. What's going on here!?? Below is an early interview with Shabutie from their hatchling high school days. It illustrates better than I could what everyone's behavior and beliefs were like at the time, as well as some of the hysterical in-fighting between high school bands. The level of mud slinging could get fairly ridiculous sometimes (thank god that's stopped, hahaha...well, now there's more too it).Pay attention, bitches. Keep in mind that Shabutie had a much weirder and eclectic style than they would end -up with in Coheed , so if some of the song titles seem really out there, they were. Not many bands save Shabutie can get away with having a song called "Have You A Little Fairy In Your Home?" (one of their best) Later on, I'll make you read a feature on Dr.Phil and then you'll really be in for it. SHABUTIE: kickin' it old school (edited for brevity, but mostly intact) written by Zac Shaw (originally saw the light of day in the impossible to find Harder Copy 12)- 1997 I was going to bust out some cheesy, adjective laden intro, but what is there to say? Shabutie is THE SHIT. There's no denying that this band is quickly accelerating to the realm of music on a professional level. The talent is there-all of the band's musicians are well studied and intensely creative on their instruments. The songwriting is there- With new songs such as "Sea Creature's Taste The Yummy Fish", they exhibit mind blowing talent and tightness. The chemistry is there- Even with the relatively new edition of Mic Todd to the ensemble, everyone seems to connect on that holy astral plane of musical oneness that every group of musicians prays for. Screw the first paragraph, Shabutie IS a professional band. I will leave you to your own devises as to whether you like the group's music or not. they are undeniably talented and tight, but they play alternative to the current mainstream fad music. In that, I mean it's a breed of funk/metal with bits of hip-hop, classic-alternative and rock ballad styles thrown in. Plus, just like bands such as Mr.Bungle and Ween, Shabutie is always refreshingly eclectic and in a constant state of change; evolution, if you will. But enough introductory verbal masturbation. On with the juice. The following if from an interview conducted Oct. 2nd , 1997 after a performance/ demonstration at Nate's old stomping ground , Onteora High. Nate Kelley (drums) and Claudio Sanchez (vocals and guitars) were present , along with Jeff Harringfeld (who has nothing to do with the band and is pretending to BE Mic in the interview, hahaha). Jeff did a poor impersonation of Mic Todd (bass), while Mic was off studying in History Class. Here's what they had to say for themselves: Harder Copy: What were the circumstances under which John Carleo (ex-Shabutie bassist) was replaced by Mic Todd (ex-Dr.Phil guitarist)? Nate Kelley: We found out he was a fireman. Since fireman are fat hicks, we kicked him out. All right, sorry. Let's get serious here, guys! Basically, he just kept missing shows every single weekend because he was too hung over to catch the bus I guess... too hangover because he was hanging' all night at the firehouse watching' Spice and drinking' beer . Harder Copy: How has Mic Todd joining the band changed your style? Jeff "Mic?" Harringfeld: I like to play bass. I made them good. Nate: He makes our music much more complex. There's much more to it now, and he's obviously a very skilled musician, so, we like him to play bass for us. Jeff "Mic": I like to play bass. My name is Mic. HC: The longer the band exists, the more unique the sound becomes. Your sound has always floated between the genres of funk and metal among other things but has always been changing. What direction are you taking now? Nate: Um, call it sacrilegious kosher Christian rock. Yeeeaaahh. HC: Who are your influences as a band and as individual musicians? Nate (to Claudio) Sunny Day Real Estate? (to me) I don't know...Weezer, their new album is so phat... Ani Defranco possibly? (*note: hahaha Ani Defucko. Personally i think Claudio sounds just like her on "Everything Evil" but in a cool way). Claudio Sanchez: The new stuff... Nate: Yeah, definitely some of the new stuff is influenced by Ani on Claudio's side. HC: What about individually? Nate: That's simple. I'm definitely influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Sunny day Real estate, Weezer, Soundgarden and Cheap Trick...70's Cheap Trick, not the 80's. Claudio: Jimi Hendrix , Ani DeFranco, Jane's Addiction and just a lot of contemporary bands. HC: What would you say if I called you the Jimi Hendrix of local music? Claudio: I'd laugh. HC: How'd ya get so good? Claudio: I don't know. I practice, really. My Dad taught me some stuff when I was young... basic chords like G and D , and then... just listen to music...have your ears open. I just caught on to certain things, I listened to bizarre shit like Eddie Van Halen, and picked up stuff from that. I mean, even though it's sucky, he is a good guitar player. I took lessons for like, a week, and whatever I got from that I use now, and just build up on it. Nate: What, am I not good enough the get asked a good question like that? What's the matter? Is Claudio the rock star? Oh, it's Claudio Sanchez and Shabutie, I suppose? (*note= yep, apparently) Jeff: I like Garth Brooks. HC: Nate, as Shabutie's resident producer, what goes into recording the band's music? Nate: What goes into recording? My underwear, I don't know. The way we've done it in the past with John...John and I would go out to the garage where my drums are set up, put one microphone up next to the drums and then he would go direct (into 4 track). we would record the bass and drum tracks and then (in an artsy voice) let Claudio come in and paint over it with his psychedelic palette of greens and blues and whatever colors we have... depending on what color the acid is. HC: What do you think about that description? Claudio: (in a tripped out voice) It's true, man...woaaohhhh. HC: Everyone's dying to know what your lyrics are about? Claudio: I don't even know! It all depends on what the song is. Some of them have to do with my best friend , Nikki, some have to do with drug problems that have been in my family, and...just society as well. HC: What about the lyric's "Pickle Boy, Now You Suck" (from the chorus of "Phillip's Head")? Claudio: That was a long time ago... when we had John... we all had this problem because we didn't know Nate very much, so that part was about him. (to Nate) Did you know that? Nate:(with a stunned look on his face) Wow, I didn't know that, that's really weird. Claudio (laughing hysterically) Oh no, Nate's gonna kill me... I thought you knew that! Nate: No, I ... Claudio: Oh, sorry about that, it was just a joke. HC: Well, Nate, since you got offended that I complimented Claudio, what if I called you the Jimi Hendrix of local Woodstock drumming? Nate: I'd say you're full of shit. Jimi sucked, he was not a good drummer. I heard Jimi play drums before, what kind of a compliment is that? HC: What is I called you the Chad Smith (of RHCP) of local drumming? Nate: (politely) Thank you. HC: How did you get to be so good? (matter of factly and sarcastically) I was born with it. I just want Jim Denadio to read this so he fuckin' (Nate stops, remembers he's in school)I mean, gosh darnit'... so he can bash me. It's been a long time since I've been in school, sorry for the "f" word. HC: Where's your favorite places to play, as in towns? Claudio: Danburry! Nate: Danburry,Connecticut is rad, they like us there. Woodstock is too hard-core, they don't like us. We're too bubble-gum fluff for them, obviously, Nyack's all right, we've got people who come out and see us. Claudio: Sometimes Nyack gets really sick. Nate: Yeah, but sometimes Nyack sucks. Atleast there people come out to see the shows though, whereas here (Woodstock) everybody just sits home and spanks their monkeys watching westerns all night instead of coming out. HC: What are your favorite unsigned local bands? Nate: I played with Melancholy for a show, with Ian (ex-Hauler) once, now that he's the new guitarist. They're going to be really, really rad. So I'd have to say Melancholy once again. And John the Baker from Slimy Penis Breath is one of my favorites. I like Three a lot.. I know people are going to be pissed that I say that, but whatever. I think they're a phat band. (to Claudio) What Nyack bands are there that are cool? Claudio: Uh...there are no Nyack bands that are cool. I went to the city and I saw a friend of mine's sister play and they're really good. Jane Hohenberger and the Spook Engine. They're really artsy, different music... it was cool...thank you. HC: Raise your hand if you like fudge. Claudio: (raises hand) Nate: (raises hand) Only when I'm packin' it. Claudio: Oh, God! HC: What do you think about the Woodstock scene? Nate: I think it is the absolute weakest scene we've played in a year. (Author's note: 1997 really did suck around here). Claudio: The only good thing that has come out of Woodstock is the festival. And the people are nice. Nate: Well, Peacebomb came out of Woodstock...well, actually they're from Kingston. But from this area, Peacebomb was the best thing to come out of it, I think. HC: Imagine you are standing in front of an audience of 500 people, because that's at least how many people are going to read this. What is your message? Claudio: 500 people? Come to our shows! Nate: Geez, I don't know. If there were 500 people, no matter what they're interested in or who they are I would say just live and die and let it be done. Live for now... one thing I've seen with people is that they're too worried about the time that's not happening now, and that's just a sad thing, especially for teenagers who are losing some of the best times of their lives... and...treat your teachers nicely, kids, and those security guards are trying their best to keep you safe all the time. HC: Pussy! Nate: Shut Up! |

Yeah that a good part, there are many random parts mentioning Shabutie, Coheed and the members all through the book.
I recommend searching shabutie and coheed under the search button to find some really cool stuff. :) |

Thanks a lot for posting this, it's always interesting to learn more about Coheed/Shabutie in detail. :) It's hard to find that much info on Shabutie too. Great read.
There's a world's worth of work and a need for you Oh, change is coming, feel these doors now closing in Is there no world for tomorrow if we wait for today?" |
