I also remember seeing somewhere that if the cd is included with the vinyl it counts as 2 record sales. If that's the case, I've bought this 3 times! (4 if you include ascension demos vinyl preorder)

After reading that article, I really like seeing music break the Top 10/Top 100 without major record labels. Fuck those guys and their money grubbing raping of bands. They've ruined the drive and creativity for so many bands over the years (aka The Starting Line). Everything we can do to make Coheed more cash with this self-financed release and to help major labels fold, I'm for it.

EDIT: And of course, I am pumped to be a part of something like these Top 10 debuts for each album. I think I am going to go out and buy a second CD, a regular CD, of Ascension today.

I'm incredibly stoked for them. I don't think precisely where an album peaks is a direct indication of its quality, but I'm certainly happy that Ascension made it as high up as it did because the exposure is wonderful for Coheed. I too hope my deluxe edition counts.

I think we just might have to thank the delay in getting the preorders for this, at least in part. I mean, I know we got the download but I can't keep track of all the times people have posted that they were so antsy about getting their hands on the album that they had to go buy an extra one until the preorder came in. I'm not saying it wouldn't have charted without the delay, but it may have been in 9th or 10th instead of 5th.

Not trying to take away from the band's success or anything, just an observation.

The real question is how the album will do in week 2. You have to assume any hardcore Coheed fans would buy the album in the first week. It would be nice if the album didn't drop off the charts after this.

I just checked the billboard 200 and was gonna comment on my own, but see there is a thread........ soooooo RIGHT ON!!!!! COHEED!!! Hopefully Afterman will will gain more and more momentum and top out at Numero Uno for like as many months until Descension comes out and can go one-two. A kid can dream.

yeah I totally agree. Most people are culprits of steeling (myself included).
its amazing to think that coheed got a gold record for 100,000 sales on good Apollo and now it's a struggle for even the pop bands to get that high. Let alone a platinum record.

Gold records are sales above 500,000. Not 100,000. Platinum is sales over 1,000,000.

It's a pretty far cry from 2001 when all the TOP 10 albums sold at least 100,000 for that week. Some over 1,000,000 in a week.

I think the digital music marketplace (as per Coheedsive's comment) is a bigger culprit than music theft. Casual music fans seldom buy albums because they can instead only pay for the few songs they will listen to.

I still buy an odd physical album every now and then but this was the first time in probably over 8 years I bought two albums on the same day (Coheed and BTBAM). With the way things are going I can't even imagine the next time that will happen.
