Most have you have probably heard of him because of "Such Great Heights". It's in that M&M's commercial, on the GardenState soundtrack and The Postal Service covered it.
But that's far from his best work.
He's a young, fully bearded singer/songwriter from Florida and he's very talented. "Our Endless Numbered Days" is a great record and I highly recommend it. My favorite song by him is "Cinder & Smoke" so I highly recommend you check that out. I just basically highly recommend this guy in general.
Those who have heard of him/ listened to him: What do you think?

Hometown hero! Portland is proud to house him.
I love this guy. He plays the one coffee house in portland sometimes....three years ago, twenty people would show up. Now, the cafe has to give tickets away in advance, or else the Fire Marshallshuts it down.
Iron and Wine is the equivelent to Guns n Roses in Portland, Oregon.

how would you like to see him perform in a place that holds fifty people, whilethe haunting aroma of espresso and hemp floats throughout the air and the rain softly hits the windows outside?
it's visual orgasm.

This is a little late for you I&W fans out there...
I saw him February 8th in Milwaukee and he was amazing. It was just him and a guitar, no band or backup vocals or anything. He played three or four songs off his upcoming album, they sounded really good. He's coming to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival... I wanna say July 14th. Come if you can!

this one is completely different from anything else, really. though you can see a progression.
I prefer the older records. my favorite is "Our Endless Numbered Days"

I couldn't resist any longer, so I listened to it.
The album is...okay. It's not bad by any means, but it's a far cry from mind blowing. The songs are pretty, pleasent, calming; they are not strikingly beautiful, they don't send chills down your spine like some of his older stuff used to. The only brilliant song is "Ressurection Fern". I've only listened through it once, but I can tell it's not the opus I expected. Also, the increased percussion/production does not add to the music. The folky, pastural texture of yore is gone; it almost sounds like The Postal Service now; all loops and hooks. It focuses too much on being catchy, and not enough on musical substance. Truly dissapointing tracks are "Carousel", "The Devil Never Sleeps", and "White Tooth Man". Great tracks are "Resurrection Fern" and "Lovesongs of The Buzzard" (the former being the true standout).
So yeah, if this was his debut record, I would be more impressed; but having heard and loved all his other work, this is the weakest LP to date.
7/10.

i agree with the old stuff being better. the song i like the most isn't even on any albums. "The Trapeze Swinger", it plays during the ending credits of good company. it's still the only movie i've sat through the whole credits, and i had to look and see who wrote it. been hooked ever since.
And then
They went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again"
And "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great
Handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
that whole damn song is quotable.

Well the show was last night. it was great, of course, but he played too many songs off the new album. though I liked them more than I usually would cause it was just him, without a band. His encore was "Dead Man's Will" and dedicated it to the NIU students. It was pretty heavy.
the one thing that bugged me was that he played at Wheaton College, which is a SUPER conservative christian school (my girl that i went with told me they're not allowed to dance) and he was "encouraged" not to curse. which really bothered me.

My friend picked it up on vinyl yesterday, it's good if you want his complete collection. Songs like The Trapeze Swinger that have only been available on soundtracks or whatnot is cool to finally have playing under a needle.
